HomeDepot and Lowes both sell a fake tin panel that is REALLY easy to cut (with scissors, even) that come in all metal colors. They can probably be painted too (like old tin ceilings used to be). The stay in place with a channel trim and two sided tape!
What look are you trying to achieve. Daisch coatings makes a great stone look with very little prep and choice of colors. Very easy. No talent needed --just a great turnout when you are done and very durable and pretty inexpensive. Go to website and see the various samples. http://www.daichstore.com/
Peal and stick backsplashes are available everywhere from Amazon to Wal~Mart as well as every home improvement store and they go over clean tile easily!

It is best to remove old tiles and start with a clean surface but if that is out, then there are beautiful vinyl 18 inch squares that you can get at Home Dept or Lowe’s that look like old fashioned metal ceiling tiles you can glue or tack over the old tiles.
I agree with Susieselect. You should remove the old tiles for best outcome. Then you could install either new tiles with adhesive and grout, or peel-and-stick tiles with grout.
Lowes DIY has a product, put on with an adhesive slip sheet behind, we are going to try it in our spare Bath. Looks great, but not heavy, but looks like real tile. 21"X12" sheets, Avenzo Premium Mosaics, with Mussel adhesive, (in a roll), one roll covers 15sq ft.& grout with unsanded grout, I like The Glacier Ice Mosaic. Check it out, hope you have a DIY Lowes store near you.
