A Douglas Fir provides a lot of shade and many types of birds make their nests in them, especially hawks. Hawks like to make their nests up high in them. I would put a bench or a hammock under your Douglas Fir. That would be a nice spot to read or just sit and watch the birds.
If it's not too dry where you live, maybe try mulching underneath with a rich compost or mulch and plant strawberries. They don't mind the needles and will create a nice green mat. :)

You can use a lot of those pine needles as mulch, too, especially if you have plants like rhododendrons and azaleas, which love pine needle mulch.
