What can be used as a temporary flood barrier on a road?

Whenever there is heavy rain, the raging, run-off from the field directly across the road floods our property. We have built a berm, but what type of barrier would stop the water on the road, before it can cross onto our property? They do make large square interlocking barriers that can be thrown together quick, however they are very expensive.

Hi Constance, do you happen to have a source of available sand? Up here we filled old feed sacks with sand and it actually worked pretty good and was very cheap.

sand bags. A ditch if possible.....I had water coming in my basement dug a shallow but larger swale..large shallow depression about 10 feet from the house. It would hold water and 24 h later the water would be gone. You might want to chat with the owner of the field....let them know how thier field is affecting your property.

Sounds like you need a steel culvert under the road to allow the water to pass to the other side.

Thank you. That is exactly right. They just will not do anything to fix it. By the way, Oregon is beautiful!

Why not dig a swale to move the water where you want? Have you checked with your city or county to see if they would assist you. If you do not own the land the road is on, they may be responsible for any flooding that occurs on your land.

Thank you. Thank you for your answer. We will beseech the County to fix this one last time. Then, we may have to seek legal recourse. It has already caused us over $11,000 in damages!

Take pictures, make a paper trail - all contacts should be in writing - letters, send them registered, return receipt requested, otherwise you have no proof of what was said. request that they contact you in writing...so sorry to hear of your plight.

Thank you for the great advice. I do have a CD of several flooding events and will follow your advice. Thanks for being a caring person.
