How to remove bathroom wall tile that has a mortar backing

Try to get a pry tool under the edge of the tile and pop them off whole or at least in big pieces

If prying it off doesn't work, you'll most likely, you have to remove the greenboard or cement board that it's hanging on. If the tile is mortared on, removing a whole wall could leave you with holes.

More than likely you will have to cut it out and put in new blue board. Or you could try to put the new over it, not sure that will look too good.

Generally if you use the first answer and get one tile to pop off, you can just use a flathead screwdriver to pop off rest. You can tap screwdriver with hammer a bit if it needs some more force. However, if you are thinking you can reuse the board below it that will be very difficult. Probably best to drywall over top of it or panel etc than to deal with wall as it is.

I have never found a more effective tool for removing mortared on tile than a hammer. You're more likely going to destroy the substrate that the tiles are attached to (drywall, plaster, concreteboard, etc) in the process, but it's really the only way if a high quality mortar was used.

You'll have to replace the substrate when you're done, but sometimes it just the only way.

I agree with Zac! I use a hammer and pound them off. There is going to be some damage to the substrate no matter what.
