i would go to the lumber yard and buy picture frame molding and put it around the room about 6 feet high. Then use cord or ribbon to hang your pictures from it. This is common in homes of that age.

Have you tried Command Strips? They have quite a variety to choose from now
Unless what you're hanging is very heavy, I agree with the Command Hook suggestions. If you are hanging something very heavy or large, you can always use two hooks to better distribute the weight.
