if it isn't a permanent dye, it will wash out eventually. the only way to lighten permanent dark hair is to strip it. Not a good idea.

Wash your hair with non-color safe clarifying shampoo to remove some of the dye.

You can, but please do it carefully. I have a friend who is a colorist and she is expensive, but no where nearly as pricey as most salons, hence a large clientele. She encounters this all the time. If you over process, you can damage your hair, which is far worse than just a too dark color.

My hair dresser told me to wash my dyed hair with Prell shampoo to lighten the color. Use it only on the areas you want to lighten.

Buy a big bottle of Prell, and scrub away. May take a lot of shampooing. A hairdresser can also take the color out for you.

I bought a hair lightener shampoo from Walmart. It comes in a yellow tube and says lighten one shade with each use. Brand name John Frieda. My hair is blonde and sometimes I manage to get it too dark . This does the trick.
