How do I get years old paint from woods trim.

I think I'd start with one of those flexible nail file emery boards - you know the thick ones with the foam in the middle? Sand gently. You may be able to get down to the wood and not go through the stain. Then just put on a little clear coat with a small brush. Kind of a hassle, but maybe less work than paint remover (which will remove the wood finish anyway) and the related clean up.

I think you'll have to use stripper. Tape off floor, and wall. Use the stripper then apply a stain to match. Always tape off. I use still wool to hell clean up. Get good chemical gloves, and a respirator. There are no toxic strippers that are good, that don't require a resperator.

Add another cover size piece of trim in the right color

I would use some fine grain sandpaper, and a new coat of stain.

Marsha is right! If you can remove that trim without damaging the original paint job, replace it. If it doesn't come off without making a mess, the only thing to do is cover it with another trim. Rebecca suggested stripper. All of the good ones are toxic, and the ones that aren't toxic don't work.

I had a similar problem. I use a dull putty knife and carefully scraped off what I could. Then I used Goof Off to soften the rest. Tape off the walls if you want. Then scrape off and wipe down.
