Best way to remove about forty years of tarnish on brass

This is a nice big hourglass that I got back in the late 70's. I've tried using some Brasso to bring it around but the tarnish is real tough. Any suggestions as to a better method? - Thanks

Try slathering ketchup on the brass. Try a small area first. If that doesn't work then it's not tarnish but patina. Similar to bronze statuary.

I HIGHLY recommend Maas Metal Cleaner. It does amazing things for a variety of metals, not the least of which is silver. I've used it on brass and love the results. Hi there, my Mom always used ketchup (tomato sauce) to clean her brass ornaments. Squirt some on a clean cloth and rub all over and then wipe off with a clean cloth and buff.
