I use it for decoration -- baskets/artificial greenery, etc. -- something that's light weight and easy to take down to dust, etc.

That depends on your decor. You can place items there that accent your kitchen decorating theme or use it for storage for items you rarely use. Personally, I would keep the number of items to a minimum because I think clutter in a kitchen is not only distracting but creates more stuff to clean. Fewer items in the kitchen also looks more sanitary where you prepare and eat your meals. I get a lot of my ideas and inspiration from magazines, on-line, home improvement shows and friends/family's homes. Be creative and have fun with it!

Depending on the size, it's not something that is really used other than display. Depending on the height too. You could install soft lights. Nicely display old no longer used kitchen items, Tins or Just nothing with lights.

You can put artificial plants and some of your collectables up there, or you can store small appliances that you don't use real often up there. My mom has space above all of her cabinets and she put artificial greens in baskets up there and southwestern type pitchers, bowls, etc. and birds up there and it looks great! She also was at a quandary what to put up there, and she had given me most of her artificial greens when she moved out of her huge house, so I brought over a few to see how they would look and ended up bringing most of them back to her to use. The southwestern décor that was added came when she had nowhere to put one of her pieces and I suggested maybe keeping it above her cabinets. It looked so good up there, that I brought all the pieces I had that matched it and we arranged them and they haven't been moved since, except for an occasional cleaning. I have one cabinet that has space above it and my spare crock pot (it is a little small for what I usually use a crock pot for) and a couple of other things.

Start by vaccuming the top if possible, and put a piece of fitted plywood on top of the cabinets. Next, put wine bottles, cookbooks, flowers, other do dad's that pertain to cooking. Don't put too many things up there, it will look crowded.
