Some mellon roots grow 12 inches - other up to 2 feet. I would use alrgepots for them. The thing to be concerned with is the fact that the plants spread out so far. Do you have room for that? Remember, that plants in pots dry out sooner and melons need a lot of water.
water mellon did fine in a 5 gal. container.. i did a sugar baby variety.
potted melon care -how to grow cantaloupes in containers

We live in Phoenix too.... We had a volunteer cantaloupe come up in one of our horse trough gardens... which are 2 ft deep... lots of room for roots and deep moisture for the plants..... the 55 gallon plastic barrels, cut in half work okay too.
Sal is correct... the plants DO spread out... BUT... cantaloupe, squash, cucumbers and other similar types can be grown on a trellis... Gardeners.com has several systems for that.... check them out to see how... then make your own if you don't want to buy one of theirs (I put my cucumbers on some wire fencing to keep them out of the dirt.
My uncle Lester used to grow cantaloupe for his truck garden...sold them at farmers markets. he would put clean sand in a mound under the matureing fruits, this helps them keep the round shape. check them daily and reposition if needed.
my uncle Lester raised cantaloupe for his truck garden. One of his tips was to mound sand under the growing fruits...it helps to keep the melons round in shape.
