I have bought some knot solution to cover the knots and don't know if I should use a primer as well, any suggestions for painting pinewood would be much appreciated.

If you do not want the knots to show through a good primer should be used

Yes, spot prime the knots first, then prime the entire piece. Primer is the foundation for paint, what paint sticks too. Don’t skip this step.

Primer is a must if you want a smooth even finish. The finished result is all about the prep. The primer closes all the pores in the wood. If primer is not used it will result in color variations in the paint..not different colors but light and dark areas. If you decide to stain, use a wood conditioner on new wood..it helps conceal imperfections in the wood that will come out when stained.

Hi Susan. I would prime it. It helps the paint adhere better.

Use a primer, it will keep the areas of wood uniform because wood is porous and will absorb the paint to different degrees, giving you a noticeable unevenness in light/dark areas.
