Hello. You can cut it so it is like a hedge. It may take a few years for the cut areas to fill in nice but can be done.

We have a Holly tree which is growing into our neighbor's driveway-blocking it, what we do is just trim/cut it back so it does not scratch their vehicles. It tends to fill in and become thicker where we trimmed, we just go back after a period of time and re-trim as needed.

You can cut it as you would any other tree. Change shape and make a Topiary shape (I've done it myself many times. If you cut it down by a lot you will have to find where the branches come out and cut above that. You will then end up with a cut stem of the trunk that will take a while to recover. It will then start to produce new foliage, which you ought to let grow before trimming to desired shape. It will take a few years to make the shape you want.......

  • We've actually cut several of ours completely back and let them grow again. Then we can shape them as they grow. Hope this helps!

You can cut it down to the size of a bush, spring is a good time. But it's always advisable to cut no more than 1/3 of the top off per year.

We trimmed out all the thick lower branches, now it's not encroaching on what's under it. Gave it some shape.

I’ve always trimmed evergreens, Holly’s, etc from inside out. You just go into the center and cut from there. If you always trim just the outside with hedgers, you will end up with sticks on the inside with just green on the outside.
