Best way to get an estimate for a new roof?

Here is how to hire a contractor. Get at least 3 (more if necessary), written bids from licensed, bonded and insured contractors, then decide!

HomeAdvisor.com and Angieslist.com can refer verified roofing companies... call several and get estimates... also... if you have damage from wind or hail... contact your home owners insurance company.... you may have coverage that will reduce the cost or pay for the whole thing.... they may have a preferred company that will be guaranteed for as long as you own the house.

Google for roofing contractors in your area, or use the good old yellow pages. Give them a call and set an appointment. Expect it to take about a half hour (or more), per estimate.

Exactly as Naomie said...at least 3 bids. Let the contractors know that you are getting other quotes. Be sure that you are comparing the same materials. For instance, their are different weights of shingles (quality, life of shingles, etc.) Be sure to get a completion date written into your contract! I speak from experience with that! :(

Also, there are sites on the internet where you can look to see whether the contractors you're getting estimates from are recommended by past customers. A site such as Yelp.com or just google their name. Keep in mind however, that people dissatisfied are more likely to post than people who are pleased with the contractor's work.

call a minimum of 3 contractors for bides. Detail what type of shingles are to be used, or purchase your self. Check the county codes...in some areas if there are multiple layers of shingle you may have to strip off all the layers and start totally over with the tarpaper and laying of the new. Have a city inspector come out and check them. You may need a permit for the construction. Get references for the contracter. Verify the reference. I’ve owned 3 different houses now, and I’ve had to set a new roof on all of them.

Chat with a retired Contractor and absorb all his input. There are channel-type strips to have in the valleys and extra shingles laid at the lower edge for endurance. A peel-off:The sub wood must be strong. If you have a chimney be sure a metal barrier is included to prevent leaks.
