Dressers aren’t my favourite thing to paint but they are fun in their own way, and a great way to get the kids involved! This is a dresser and small night stand for our son’s room. You can see what he likes.... super heroes!
Here is what I started with.... pretty good condition but lots of cleaning to do and missing hardware. It also was very shiny so needed some sanding.
I love being able to get the kids involved! The fronts of the drawers were an easy and fun way to do that! I painted them with 2 coats of white paint then put them outside and gave our son a palette of acrylic paint colours and let him do whatever he wanted! Splattering paint is messy so outside in the summer was a perfect time for this project!
I painted the outside of the dresser in a dark blue- picked by our son but also by me so the colours would all go together. I did add a varathane clear coat to the top because, well, it is for our son’s room. :)
I found another piece for the hardware and just painted them the same blue as the outside of the dresser and voila! It was done! It’s such a fun piece and he loves telling people that he did the splatter paint!
I didn’t get a photo of the before but it was a lot of work getting it ready to paint! Lots of damage- so lots of sanding needed and some filling of holes and cuts. I painted it with white chalk paint (a recipe I got from a friend who is absolutely amazing at refinishing furniture- Larissa Haynes at Prodigal Pieces... She is also on Facebook.)
I decided to add the dark blue like I did on the dresser to this piece as well. Now, my son’s turn again. I let him plan out and decide what he wanted to paint on the top.
All super heroes! Can you guess each one? The only one you won’t know is the red flying one.... he made him up... Heart Man- he brings people back to life. :)
Now for the fronts of the drawers.... I drew these out in pencil, free hand from pictures I found online. You can see the edge of my iPad as I was holding it to copy from. :)
These were his picks, in order of favourite from top to bottom... Superman, Green Lantern and Batman. I used acrylic paint for these. The trickiest part was making sure the knobs were part of the logo, especially the Superman one, but it all worked in the end.
The finished piece. Oh! I did add a clear coat of varathane to the top and drawer fronts of this piece!
