I think it took me one year being conservative and I had to purchase more but then every year after I knew how much I needed. Compare prices. I’m over in Brighton/Howell area. I never buy bagged but I also have many beds. If what you are showing in the picture is it then def. buy bagged. For me it was cheaper and easier to get square yards of mulch delivered. They dump in in my driveway and I use a wheelbarrow. First year I got the minimum for free delivery which was three square yards. It cost $120’ish. A few more beds were added and I’m up to 6.
Measure your length of the beds and the widths, multiply those numbers to get your square feet then multiply that number by 6 (inches deep for weed control) Then go to the landscape supply and ask for .... sq feet of mulch, to which they will convert into yards. If I remember correctly one square yard fits into a bucket of a loader.
I buy Melaleuca mulch by the bag (Melaleuca is an invasive plant in our region of Florida so this helps the cause and the cost is minimally higher than Cypress). Cypress is endangered, so I don't use it, and I don't care for other types of mulch. The Melaleuca bags, when laid flat, are about the depth of mulch that I need. So I buy the number of bags that fit my beds + 2 more (because I always seem to need it).
In my area only Lowe's sells Melaleuca mulch and the bags are easier to distribute (for me). Our county will provide free mulch, but I've looked at it and I'm thinking no thanks - it has large pieces and who knows what's in it. You are very fortunate if you can get free mulch (free of all weeds, etc.) in your area. Also, we'd have to pick it up as they don't deliver.
I also lived @ least 1/2 hr from everything for over 40 yrs; you learn to adapt. Purchase more than you think you'll need then & if you have leftovers you either store it for another time/project or return the leftovers next time you're out near when you bought it!!!

The bags usually come with measurement charts printed on the back of the bags.

1 yard covers 150sg.ft 2” thick ( anything more than 2” thick tends to cause a fungus, and can be damaging to the plants.
Just keep returning to the nursery till you've got it!!
