Applying subway tile to drywall

Can you apply subway tile directly on painted drywall just with mastic or mud or does there have to be cement board underneath? Thank you

You apply it directly on. I have done many back splashes and shower walls. This is my kitchen backsplash.
No cement board needed. Just apply it right on.
If you are putting the tile in an area where there is water... you do not want to use plain drywall....it is not even water resistant... you can use one of the new water resistant ones... then use a waterproof membrane or barrier medium.... especially in a shower.... most of the cement hardy backer is waterproof... but the seams need to be taped and sealed (follow the directions for the hardy backer.
No need for cement board, no one will be walking on it, so it doesn't need that kind of bracing.
We light,y sanded the wall and just applied the tiles with the mud. I don’t think it’s necessary to add a cement board unless you are putting some heavy duty tiles on the wall!
Cement board is required in places like bathrooms but the splash back of kitchen counters and vanities will generally take the tile quite well.
Cement board and related products for any areas that will have water nearby.
