I use white vinegar and water and newspaper. Not on a bright sunny day either!
Vinegar and water
Yes, I have a service that comes in twice a year to do the insides, outsides and screens. BUT I still clean the windows all the time, I have pets. Vinegar and newspaper. I have done it so long, I do not get streaks, just takes some practice. Just do one room at a time instead of trying to do the entire house all at once.
white vinegar and water 50/50 a dab of blue dawn dish soap and a dab of jet dry
newspaper and windex
I there I also use white vinegar water and newspaper, of course hiring it out would be the easiest!
White vinegar and water and a squeegee with a handle like you see at gas stations for wiping off windshields after washing. Key is to apply water/vinegar mixture liberally, maybe use a soft brush if needed if very dirty, then start at the top corner and use the squeegy in a back and forth horizontal direction and never lifting it entirely off the glass until you've reached the bottom of your window. No streaking or lint from using a cloth or paper. Try it out! Actually an automotive supply store probably have the squeegees available for purchase.
Warm vinegar and water mixture
make sure the squeegee blades (get the kind of squeegees that have replaceable blades, not an all-in-one molded piece) are clean, flexible and not nicked or bent. Don't store your squeegees resting on their blades. Overlap your strokes by half and don't let the glass dry out before you squeegee-it's better to re-wet the glass. Brushes work better than sponges because a sponge or cloth can hold grit and scratch the glass. A larger squeegee doesn't mean you'll work less because it's very hard and exhausting to apply even pressure from end to end of the blade. Wipe blade after every stroke, keep a damp towel and a separate dry towel to wipe edges of the windows. Very old windows may have to be hand washed and dried because of their uneven or sometimes bubbly surface. I washed windows while in college many decades ago and still love to have clean windows!
