Something to use as a area rug, other then carpet

Have you tried puppy pads? Mine never took to them but many have had great success using them.

I would get some of the outdoor polystyrene rugs that you can hose off. But I would also crate the dog when unattended and to train to potty outside. What about an area rug that can be used inside or outside? They are easy to clean, and won't absorb like regular carpet. You can spray the rug with vinegar or go to the Pet Store for Bitter Apple spray. Sometimes it works, sometime not! It does have to be reapplied occasionally.

Create a nice pattern using carpet squares? (replace just the square if necessary), or perhaps stencil the floor for a rug affect (may be too permanent though).

I have had that same problem. I have decided to clean and roll up my nicer rugs and save for when guests come. I have some very simple (low pile, but pretty design) and inexpensive rugs that I use for everyday.

This is a painted (oak) floor. This would be easier to keep clean. It is in two rooms. Does not cost much to paint, wears well, washes easily. Also you can buy sheet linoleum (not real linoleum but vinyl) as much as you need either in a color you like or to paint on the reverse side. Washable rugs would work too, but might be "trippy" Can't you get those toilet pads for your dog or confine him?

Try the rugs that are designed for outside use. They can be taken outside and hosed off.

You will want to sanitize any rug that the dog goes on and rinsing it off with cold water from the hose wont do that, Use a bathroom rug that is not shaggy, or fury, or microfiber. Get the at a dollar store. Don't get one with rubber backing, instead put doggie piddle pads underneath to protect the floor. Rubber backing can stick to floor and leave a residue when it does.

A bath rug you can remove any solid waste and wash them by First doing a rinse only with warm water or hot if possible, then a regular wash using a detergent and oxyclean stain and odor blaster. Dry in dryer or hang. After washing, run a sanitary cycle in machine.

Have you thought of doggie diapers for when your pet is home alone and no one is available to take him/her out? Could prevent accidents on rugs.
