steel wool stain would be rust -- vinegar shouldn't leave a stain -- WD40 makes a 'rust' remover, and there is one called 'UN-Rust' ..
I make mine in a mason jar.
It is a great product to use if you replacing old rotten boards on the deck. This solution will age your new boards to match the old ones. Or if you have a new installation like a mailbox post -vinegar steel wool solution will help season the wood to be a more natural weather color.
