The ground is hard. I have tried all kind of store brand grass seads. Nothing seems to penetrate that ground.

If the ground is hard, you're going to have to do some serious work. Get a book on lawn care from your library, consult your local cooperative extension, or do internet search on starting a lawn. The major seed/lawn care companies, like Scott's and Pennington, might also have information on their websites.

  • Here are some great links to walk you through the process. If you do not have sprinkler or irrigation system in place, now is the time to do so before starting new grass.

Have you tried to oversaturate the ground before planting your grass seeds?

Ive has luck with that. Used soaker hoses to get the ground very wet then sprinkled the grass seeds. It wasn’t the instructions but it’s what worked for me.

Thatch the lawn, remove any debris, apply a few inches of top soil, lime and grass seed for you location, top with starter fertilizer and peatmoss....keep moist until geminated

Rather than dig up the dead grass, you need to get a cultivator in to loosen the soil since it is compacted and turn what's there under. After you spread grass seed, put a light layer of mulch or straw over it to hold in the moisture and give the seeds a chance to start.

You cannot just throw seed on the ground. You need to till the soil until softened. Then Fertilize, water, plant seed and cover lightly with wheat straw to keep the birds form eating the seed. Not an easy project.Hire a Landscaper; it would be much easier.

It is a lot of work but you must loosen the ground, use a tiller, or do it by hand with one of those tools you just twist, then water water water...show your seed, cover with straw, and water water water...

You need to start by digging the ground to soften it. You may also need to add top soil before planting. Then water regularly until the new grass sprouts and becomes established. Also check which type of grass does best in your area.
