Google “plants that like clay soil”. Lots of results including Black-eyed Susan and daylillies and vibermum. And these from folks who know a lot more about it than I. My guess the “finish” includes mulch. You can likely do the same for grasses. And now is the perfect time to plan

Mine too, mine is clay through and through and the only way to get it to grow is to add top soil. I am having to add top soil to my garden this year, actually thinking of digging up some of the clay, really do not want to do this. I spent way too much money last year only for the plants and flowers not to grow. I had to get the yard top dressed last year as well and probably needs it again this year. I had 2 landscape companies come out and this was their solution.

I have this problem as well. I add sand and top soil. Mix really well. Make sure you break up the clumps.

I have a friend who is a very good gardener. When they downsized from their house to a condo, the soil in the new place was very clay y. The dug it out to the depth of 6 inches then amended it heavily. Although she does not have the vegetables she did in the old yard she have very nice flowers.
