How do you dye or bleach a jute rug?

Purchased a jute rug 10x14. It arrived in brown instead of oyster/ivory like i wanted. Discovered it was non-refundable.

I have a jute rug in our guest room. It has been there many years. It has a water stain from a window being left open in the rain. There is nothing to be done about it, except someday if I can get the man power I will reverse the rug so the stain is under the bed. I don't think anything else can be done as this is a natural fiber and a coarse one.

Wow - three years on I am searching for a way to maybe stain my jute rug and found this thread.

I had to respond here because - this is far fetched for sure, but I may have received your oyster/ivory like rug, because this same year I ordered a jute rug and it was supposed to be sort of a tobacco color like yours. Wouldn't that be crazy if it were true that I found my long lost rug and you found yours. Lol! I didn't return it because it so big and heavy.

But I didn't want a light colored rug for just the reason I'm here. I'm looking for ideas to stain this thing to a darker color so I can hide all the stains from foot traffic and my pets. I've tried cleaning stains but with not much luck. Now it's just dingy too.

The only thing I can think of that might work for me is to use coffee to stain it. It's natural and would dry without leaving any real residue...at least I don't think it would. I don't want to dye or paint it. And I have another smaller rug laying in the center of it. I figure I could put some super strong coffee in a spray bottle and periodically spray the exposed areas and then let it dry. If it looks okay, then repeat until it looks dark enough.

Thoughts anyone? If anyone still reads this thread 3+ years on...

I have the same issue with a rug I just got today. Did the coffee work out? I’m thinking of doing the same.

      thanks!
