Are you supposed to put sand in the bottom of a store bought firepit.

A friend told me it is recommended, to keep the fire from eventually burning through the metal. Is that correct?

Check manufacture's advice on line. I have seen this before, but I think its more to help with heat distribution.
Your fire pit must have come with instructions.never take someones advice with out checking what the manufacturer states .not all fire pits are the same....common sense
