I am constantly batteling rust in my home in western IL. We have a well and water has high iron levels....it can be a nightmare to deal with. The best thing I have found is "Iron Out". It comes in powder or spray. I use the spray on my sink.....you'll want to clean your sink as you always do then spray Iron Out .....you'll watch the iron just run down the sink....its AMAZING!!! I use the powder on my toilets ....clean bowl as normal ..flush..then I add 1/4 cup to bowl close the lid and half hour later come back and flush. They also make tablets to put in the tank...I use them but I don't find they eliminate the rust....hence the weekly treatment. My shower also gets "rusty"...I have large ceramic tile on the walls and formed plastic? base. I use the spray on the shower...again clean as usual then spray Iron Out. You'll want to make sure to turn your exhaust fan on and open windows if you have them. I stand behind the glass door and spray to avoid breathing the fumes. I also deal with rusty white laundry....I use half a cup to the load of ALL WHITES add your detergent and let the machine do its thing. Voila white clothes...a grey face cloth was in the load of whites and it came out PINK!! So check each addition to the load or you'll get funky colored items out.

I do want to stress that this stuff is strong and could hurt you...you don't want to breath the fumes. Follow all manufacturers directions.

DO NOT LET YOUR CHILDREN NEAR THIS STUFF!!!!! I use it when I'm the only one home so no one else could get hurt. This stuff has been a miracle for me....whole house filtration system is my only alternative and that would run close to $10,000.00 ...for now its Iron Out.

Just a heads up that many people don’t know about stainless steel! It’s their nickel content that makes the difference how much and how fast they rust and look old in no time! You can get a $39.00 stainless steel sink that has very little nickel content that you’ll be fighting forever to keep it looking nice or you can spend $300.00 plus for a high quality stainless steel sink with a high nickel content that will not need near the maintenance to keep shinny and won’t rust anywhere near as easy! This is definitely one area where you get what you pay for! Save yourself a lot of scrubbing trying to remove rust and buy a expensive sink! You’ll be happier in the long run!
