What prep needs to be done to paint over brass finish, i.e. barstools?

I would clean and dry the metal. Use spry paint primer rated for metal. Then the final spray paint color finish of your hoice.
We just cleaned the metal with mineral spirits and then sprayed with Rustoleum. No problems after about 5 years
Spray paint for metal such as Rustoleum will do it.
Make sure the surface is completly cleaned first- have fun!!
