My father was a carpenter, and he had golden hands. One of the few things that he crafted for me and I still have is a small stool with curved legs. Despite its lovely appearance, I could hardly find a place for it in my home. It just didn’t fit in…
It was desperately asking for a makeover, and I heard its calling. Now the little fellow fits in perfectly, because it has been painted and decorated with stencils and ink.
And it was also a good opportunity to test if chalk paint goes along with ink markers.
Using chalk paint is easy and versatile. You can follow the process in the video above and see how easily the paint is spreading, and how the furniture looked through different stages of this makeover.
Briefly, clean the surface, apply the first coat of paint, then wait 10 to 15 minutes before applying the second coat. Wait for the paint to get dry before going any further.

The funny thing was that painting this stool gave me the opportunity to take a good look at the details, namely the angel wings that were embracing the upper side of the legs.
I took the sponge and added some accent color on them. It was a great idea, as the Country Grey looks awesome on Original white. The poppy stencil would later fit in perfectly…
I was really anxious about ink drawing on chalk paint. I had a bit of chills about it, since this stool is so dear to me, then I said to myself “what the heck?! I will just cover it with white paint if it won’t work!”.
But in the end, there is nothing to be ashamed of and cover with paint. I gave it a good coat of clear wax, then I polished the stool to make it shine.
I'm so happy with the result since it was a double win. First, a dear craft from my father is there, standing in my family room. Then the new technique I have tested will provide new opportunities for my future projects.
