Mulch your grass cuttings and leaves. If you must water do it correctly to promote deeper roots. Avoid chemical fertilizers as they cause superficial root systems that is not healthy. Do not mow the grass too short because it will burn. Keep the blades on your mower sharp so you cut the grass blades and don't tear the blades. Now your yard in a different direction each time you mow.

We use Scott's 4 -step lawn care. My husband applies it on the lawn every couple months. He uses a walk-behind spreader to apply it. We water the lawn regularly. We are fortunate to have well water used outside the home and city water inside.

Soil testing, soil amending per report, aeration, proper seed for situation ( climate and sun exposure) and adequate watering all impact maintenance of healthy turf.

It really depends on what is causing it to be thin. If you rake a section and a lot of thatch comes up, then it needs dethatching (not more grass clippings.) If it's hardened soil between clumps of grass, it needs aeration. If it's too shady, then you need to overseed with a shade tolerant variety, etc. You get the picture.

Overseed at 2 week intervals for a month or 2. Keep it watered, I did that and have had a beautiful lawn for the last 3 years! And tell kids and mailman to use the sidewalk.
