I built shutters similar to the ones cynthia posted except I did not use the diagonal piece and I left a space between each vertical board. They are cottagey looking and super simple to make. Basically cut three 1 x 4's to the desired length and lay them either butting right up to one another or with a gap between, your preference. Cut two pieces of 1 x 4 to go horizontally across the top and the bottom. So that the screws don't show, put the cross pieces underneath the long boards and screw them in. Paint or seal and hang! This is from my bay window, which is really long, so there is a 3rd cross piece in the center.

Love it. I would love to do this on my house. I want to put shutters on the sides of my sliders also. Do you think this would work there too? The back to the house looks so bare with just windows and doors. Our siding is vinyl and we have vinyl shutters now on just front windows but they are all faded and I want to replace them. How do you attach them to the siding?
