Detachable Balcony Railing

This is a repeat request. I have an 8 ft. wide balcony opening that is used to haul up heavy furniture, so I need to have a detachable railing. Of course, when not in use, it must be strong enough to avoid any accident. The material can be wood or any metal. I was thinking aluminum, but metal might be harder to work with. I‘d Like to have someone in my area (New Orleans) build it, so I’ll look for someone in my city. I just need plans.

Leave it to a stair company. There’s is absolutely no need for you to try to design it and reinvent the wheel and since you don’t know what your doing your just wasting your time. There’s a safety issue if done improperly and they have done it a number of times I’m sure. You’ll sleep better knowing it’s done right.

You may want to look at mounting hangers on the sides of the opening, like are used on outdoor fences. Then you could slide a wood or aluminum segment in and out of the section. You may want to take the dimensions into a fencing store or lumber store and ask them to help you design it.

Look up driveway gates. GreatFence.com, and others, offer multiple width and height gates. While you might not want a pair, I’m sure these companies offer single options. I assume you want attractive, and these are certainly that. Lots of brains to pick here, but you do want a gate rather than a railing.

Be sure to check local code for railings before making any expensive decisions.
