If you want to paint it with standard paint, you will need to sand it down pretty well with an orbital sander. Or, you could invest in a good adhesion primer, so you can sand less and use the primer before painting to create a workable surface. If you want to try avoid sanding, you can use chalk paint, which is made specifically to adhere to surfaces so that you don't have to do any heavy sanding. Also, check out these links:

It depends on what type of paint you want to use. Take off all the hardware, remove drawers and use a medium grit (180-220) paper/sander to rough up the entire surface (don't worry too much about all the intricate nooks and crannies). You may want to use a primer to help cover the knots in the wood (they could bleed through with some paints).
There is also a liquid that will remove the glossy surface. Fairly nasty so if you do try it follow directions carefully and do it outside. This would handle all of the nooks and crannies as well.
is that a burn...or knot?
Just use chalk paint and there is no sanding involved.
second the chalk paint...or rustoleum paint with built in primer.
How about unicorn spit?
