Hostas are great. They are low maintenance and come in different varieties. They are great border plants, they would look nice along the front of your house and along the side of your garage.

Front yard: Get rid of the stump first. It looks like the walkway to the front door is on the thin side, I would do something like pavers to frame it on both sides. Use pavers to make a seating area like a porch. You can make a garden with sharp edges or curvy. Make a border to match the pavers. Put shrubs along the house but not to close, you need to leave room for them to grow. Then plant flowers. I like to layer my garden, putting in higher plants toward the back and lower ones in the front. I don't know what will grow in your area, I live in New Jersey and my go to for low growing, with lots of color are vinca flowers (not the vine). They do well in shade and sun. You should go to your local nursery and find out what will do well in your area.

Back yard: I can't tell how big your yard is. From what I see, I would put a few shrubs and a tree or two. A waterfall and pond for some fish. A fire pit with seating around it so you hang out and have some toasted marshmallows, maybe s'mores. You can use the same pavers from the front.

Walkway to backyard: I would put a shrub in the corner and some flowers around it. Make a walkway with the same pavers from the front.

It's hard to see much of your front yard, but get rid of the stump. Find a place that does trees. They have special equipment to level off the stump. Once this is done, place a large planter over the stump, or remove it completely.

For low maintenance plants go for plants that are native to your area. Black-eyed Susans, Coral Bells, Coneflowers, Bee Balm are all plants that come up every year and will get bigger. Check online about each plant to see if they are plants you would like. What kind of bushes would you like in the front, evergreen, boxwood, short or tall or ones with flowers? Once you got rid of the stump a nice flowering tree would look really good there. Like a Dogwood, Redbud, ornamental Pear, Cherry tree, etc. Make sure you check out more information about each one, then you'll know how big they get and what soil they grow in. I can't tell if you have wires overhead, if you do you need to be careful what tree you put there.

Backyard there are many choices here is one website to check out for a variety of ways to design that space, Pinterest. To be family friendly I would think you want to not go overboard with plants so you still have space to enjoy. Also keep in mind with plants, if any of your family members is allergic to bees, there are many plants that attract them.

Your backyard needs some furniture, patio. If you have grandchildren get a swing set. Get a BBQ, some extrax chairs. Maybe make a fire pit, and buy beverage holders. They are squiggle, they come in many colors, and they stick in the ground, and can be use over and over again. The landscape around the perimeter should be all different potted plants. Alternate low one with high one, it will give a nice look. The fence on the side, get some viynl fencing, which you can wash with the hose. The back fence needs a paint job. Buy one that is weatherproof. If I could be there, this would work fine. P.S. get an game like volleyball, or tennis. Put it in the back part of yard.
