Hi there, I created a little "foyer" in my home by including a place near the door for a "drop off" station. In my case it was an dresser that I refinished, above it I added a mirror and now, every time I come home I automatically go to it and drop my keys, the mail and my purse off. When I leave I know where everything is and I have a mirror to check myself before heading to work.
Designate the space with a good size area rug and maybe a bench to be able to sit and put on your shoes.
Our front door opens onto the carpetted living room; rather it did! It was hard to keep a little rug in place because the door was so close to the carpet. So, when we needed new carpet, we had a rectangle cut out the width of the door and about three feet into the room. We have hardwood under this carpet, so applied vinyl tiles directly to the wood and the carpet laid up to it. Makes a very moppable spot. The vinyl tiles peels up easily when you get ready to change decor. The adjacent dining room is the hardwood.
I love the bench type hall trees. Maybe that with a nice rug.
You can create a small foyer with a small table and chair. You can add a coat rack if needed. Define the area with a beautiful indoor/outdoor area rug. Here's an example of the rug: https://smile.amazon.com/Fab-Habitat-Seville-Recycled-Multicolor/dp/B00P04NHW4/ref=sr_1_20?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1520629193&sr=1-20&keywords=indoor+outdoor+rug

Put a sofa back beside the "foyer" with a sofa table behind it, Put a lamp or two on the table.
I'm planning on putting a coattree next to the entry
Can you change the flooring in a space defined near the door, either with a bookcase or couch as suggested earlier? Maybe add tile for a more weather-proof entry?
A handsome folding screen. Whether it’s bamboo or chinoiserie or country, it should please your eye. Ideally, a small chair and table on one side, for taking off boots, or narrow console table, and another piece of furniture on the other side for stabilization.
