I don’t know how large your sinkhole is; but it will have to be stabilized. Have any professionals been to look at it?

Anything you do to fix it from above will eventually just get swallowed by the sinkhole. You'll have to find out the source of the erosion underground.

Have you contacted your home insurance company? Insurance may cover an evaluation and the repair if it is actually a sinkhole and not a subsidence incident—a man made problem caused by things like collapsed or broken sewer pipes and drainpipes, broken septic tanks and buried trash, or soil that wasn't properly compacted after excavation work. Do you know the cause of the sink hole? Good Luck!

I would call the city and a soil engineer ASAP, either there is instability in the ground and/or a massive water leak causing the cave-in.

That's pretty scary! You are lucky it was not your actual home.

You need to find out the cause of the sinkhole and that could be done by your county, there are several causes and the correct 1 needs to be identified by professionals to remedy the situation so it never happens again.

As awful as this sounds, the media could help you get action by just bringing it to the attention of the officials. From there they would have to act on the cause with the appropriate agencies stepping in. A band-aid fix is not a good fix to a serious problem.
