$700 is cheapest to take up and replace. Can I glue on top. Or what?

You should be able to get that carpet off yourself. Pull it off and scrap the glue ridges--maybe even sand. You may not get it all off. Then use some kind of flooring to cover it. Carpet. Laminate floor. Tiles and grout. 5 x 5 is not a very big space. There is no way it should cost 700.00 to redo it. You do not want to go over the top of it--the carpet needs to be removed.

Is there any way that you can get help from a neighbor, a younger friend or a relative? The area is just so small that I think having to pay 700.00 to do it is way, way, way out of line. Where did you get that estimate?? Did you check with a local Home Depot--often times they install for free. I just am worried that someone is trying to take advantage of you. 700.00 is just too much for a 5 x 5 area.

Never met a carpet I couldn't yank up.... sometimes run a box knife to cut into smaller strips. No you cannot glue something on top and be safe.
