How do you make a retaining wall using logs?

Well, it's more than a one weekend job unless it's a really short area! We used long spikes to hold the logs to each other. Also, put the first layer into the ground with spikes. These required drilling holes in the logs, which, of course required long extension cord to keep the drill handy while working! It was a fun project to hold dirs for a flower bed along the front of the porch, but I don't know how build one that is very high. You might think cement blocks instead of longs if it is really a retaining wall around your yard. These can also be held (up and down) with the spiky things used in pouring cement!
We drilled holes in ties so that they were in the same place, three to four holes per long tie. We put them in place and pounded in rebar to hold them in place so that a couple of feet of the rebar was in the ground. This anchors them down really well. You should be able to do the same thing with logs put down horizontally. If you want them vertical you will need to sink them in the ground sufficiently to have them be sturdy and not fall forward from whatever is behind it.
