Nneed extra sleeping space

My 15 yr old would like a new( trundle) bed, so when a friend sleeps over neither of the boyshas to sleep on the floor. My son's twin bed is in fine shape, so if we could, we'd buy him a trundle to pull out, and top it with a new mattress. The problem is that his twin bed frame is kind of old and isn't standard height off the floor, so when we find a trundle sold alone, it won't fit under the bed frame. I think it would look junky to just have a mattress on the floor under the bed, but that's what my son is asking to do-just a twin mattress, that he could pull out when a friend sleeps over. Any advice, friends?

You could make a frame of 1x4's around the mattress that goes on the floor, and put those poly sliders on it so it pulls out easily. Add a handle and it will look like some of the trundle "drawers" you buy. Or you could get bed lifts so a trundle would fit under it. Or you could just put a dust ruffle on the bed so the matress under it doesn't show.

@Polly Zieper I definitely would go with @Cori from The Flying C 's idea! For "drawer pulls" you could put a couple big pieces of knotted rope on the open side or you might also use pallet wood - the "notched" pieces would give you a drawer pull. You might even be able to fit some small sized casters from almost any home improvement store, but you'd probably need more than just one in each corner for more sturdiness! Post pictures - would love to see how it comes out!

Would your son like a dust ruffle? Mine wouldn't have when he was 15....but would hide the mattress of the trundle that is for sure. How about framing out the matress on the trundle and putting a drawer like board on front so his bed will look like a bed with a drawer under it. Of course rollers/sliders on the trundle matress frame.

Put a support brace under a piece of plyboard, add casters and roll it out of wherever you want it in the room. If it is useful and boys like it, who cares?

Pat, I don't know if he'll go for it or not. There are dust ruffles that have boxy corners, which are a bit more masculine-looking, I'll look for one of those, but you can be sure I WON'T be telling him that its called a dust ruffle!:)

Pat, the drawer idea is great, in fact I think I've seen some trundles in stores where you can't tell if its a drawer or a bed.

Polly, I had to laugh when you said you won't be telling him what a Dust Ruffle is.. Good luck with whatever you do....

We got a blow up twin mattress that he kept in his closet! His room was a converted attic room 9.5x9. Worked great

I've used those 'bed risers' sold at many stores (I got mine at BED, BATH & BEYOND). They look like mini traffic cones and are put under the legs of a bed to raise it up off the floor. I think they come in two heights 6" and 10 or 12". They should raise his bed high enough to accommodate a standard trundle bed to fit under it.
