Petunias come in multiple colors and are extremely easy to grow in full sunlight. Just pick off the dead ones every few days and water every few days. I'm in Myrtle Beach and use these every year.

Ask your local agricultural agent or nurseryman.
I have the best sucess with geraniums. In my zone 7 they're tough and sturdy and fully stand up to our summers heat and humidity. I do some of the other mixed annual baskets but they tend to die off in parts before the season ends. I often get geraniums on the clearance rack and the are marvelous rebloomers. I do use some soil moist in the pots.
I do a pot of moonflowers from seed too. They are vining and the trumpet flower is an interesting slow opening show to watch and they are fragrant.
