We had bare walls where one usually has a backsplash. Having just moved we wanted a unique backsplash with little expense. Some creative thinking and an easy cost friendly idea was born.

Our wall before backsplash

If you're like me you have collected mementos and small gifts over the years. You keep them, but you wonder what to do with them. Meanwhile, they hide in a box gathering dust. Time to dig them all out.

These will make your backsplash.

Types of momentos I used. Anything will work.

I purchased some slate tile samples at Home Depot. Approximately $4.00 for a stack of 6 tiles. You can use whatever samples you like. If you have small items, stick them on to a tile so they don't "disappear" within the pattern.

I used 3M Double Side Tape so the items could be removed without removing the plaster with the item. Depending on the shape and design of the item, I applied two to four cut to fit pieces of tape. Simply place the tape on the back of the item and then on to the wall and push hard.

I began to tape and secure my items to the wall.

I began securing my items. I began in the middle, working up and out. Because the completion of total coverage may take as long as a month you'll want the portion you've covered to look intentional; you may have to wait until you get more items;

The left side of this picture is not finished. I will continue when I receive more items. I covered the wall up to the under part of the cabinets. You could go to the ceiling.

Final kitchen backsplash

As people gave me new tiles, I attached them to the wall. I only have a small portion left to do and that is around the kitchen desk.
