It looks like Anchorage is in the 4b category. I could send you pictures of plants that might work, but your best step, in my opinion, would be to go to local plants stores/nurseries that are in your area to see what's available. One that is mentioned on several lists of plants that can live in your area is coleus that has variegated colorful leaves. Coleus is a very popular shade plant in many areas because of it's colors. I googled this and have found that you have to have some sun for all veggies...even herbs require 3-5 hours of sun.

But if you are planting flowers, there are several that like shade. Goggle your planting zone and investigate!

Check with a LOCAL nursery... there are plants that will do well in shaded conditions... but... not all will do well in cooler temperatures... or last thru the winter (we have the opposite problem here in Arizona) without being in doors or in shelter... take a walk in the woods or in your local area and see what others are growing in the same conditions... but here are some ideas for containers to use
