What do you recommend to clean an iron with?

I have some brown spots on my iron plate, I do not know what it is from.

White Toothpaste
A few dabs of white (not gel) toothpaste on a damp cloth.
A paste of baking soda and water, let it set and it should come right off with a sponge. rinse well.
