Challenged this week to find something at a thrift store to repurpose that also solves a problem, I found my way to our local ReStore on my lunch hour. I generally look for furniture items there, but I really wanted to participate in this challenge so I kept myself to the odds and ends side of the store. The problem I needed to solve was a blank spot on my dining room wall (although, I didn't know that was the problem I was working on at the time). I was coming up short when I spotted a stainless steel gravy boat and plate. Now isn't that something you'd love to hang on your wall?
Here's my find. It cost $3. A little steep, if you want my opinion. Actually, when I got home, I found one just like it (sans plate) in my cupboard LOL!
Using a very strong, clear, multi-surface adhesive, I attached the gravy boat to the plate. I'm not sure why the plate looks tarnished in this photo, but it wasn't.
I weighted it with a bottle of seltzer and left it like that overnight (just to be sure).
I pulled off a tab from a dog food can and using the same adhesive, I applied it to the back of the plate. Again, I let it sit for the rest of the day while I was at work. Be sure to put the tab at the spout end of the plate so that the sconce hangs properly. Also, center it and apply it as straight as possible.
Using some wire and an old candle ring that I had in a drawer, I fashioned a sort of wreath for the gravy boat sconce. After all, I don't want anyone really noticing that it's a gravy boat!
I also used a small bunch of artificial leaves to fill it out. $0.99 in the clearance aisle at Michael's!
While at Michael's, I couldn't resist the white wall frame - on sale for $7. It was the perfect shape and size to work with my gravy boat and provided yet another layer of illusion. I melted some wax to hold my candle in place, but I am waiting for a realistic flicker candle to arrive. I don't like burning real candles, especially with the silk leaves so close. I plan to make several "wreaths" for the sconce to change seasonally. What do you think?

What a great idea! Could you tell me what kind of countertop you have? Is it a granite? We are doing a remodel and I like it.

How did you hang the plate on the frame?
