How can I grow herbs indoors year around?

I live in Colorado yet want fresh herbs all year. Don't want a mess every time I water, so I need good drainage that stays contained.

Hi Debby. I recently purchased a Miracle Grow Areogarden. I absolutely love it. It is easy to take care of.

For drainage consider a coffee filer at the bottom of the pot, with broken Styrofoam on top.

You will need grow lights to make sure they get enough light to get big healthy plants. If you use larger pots, you will get larger plants that will give you all the herbs you need for cooking. I use ten to twelve inch pots that are outdoors for the summer and can be brought in for winter. If you want less spillage when you water, get the self watering pots, I get mine at Walmart and Home Depot. I like the WalMart ones, the holes are more user friendly. They even have self watering window boxes this year. I would also get a moisture meter, when they are in the house they may need more watering due to the dryer inside air. Keep up the fertilizer year round, I use the sustained release granular kind. If you use regular pots, I take the bottom off so that the plants don't have sitting water in them and can drain well. I use the trays you can purchase that are like the pot or the clear plastic ones that are about two inches deep. Be conservative as to how much you take off the young plants, just enough for it to branch off and get fuller. This, I hope will help you have the year round herbs that you want. I tried one year to bring in all my herbs and had it in a south window that got lots of sun, but it wasn't enough light to sustain healthy full plants and they got real leggy and all of them didn't do well except my rosemary that grew like a bush.
