I haven't tried but several creative thoughts come to mind. Large paint stir sticks come in approx 16 and 20 or 21 inch lengths, check with local hardware store or 3/$1 online. Cut cardboard, luan or plexiglass to size for sides and bottom and attach together with duct tape. Use two stir sticks per corner and glue in place. If your sticks are longer that you need them the could overhang on the bottom as "feet". You could cut sticks and use them side by side to reinforce bottom or even use them side by side to cover entire project for a rustic look. Paint, wallpaper, contact paper etc are all possible finishes depending on your project.

Make your own trash "can" from cardboard box. Measure a 9" square from a box, use that as the base, then cut (maybe from the corners of a box, to make the corner or cut 4 pieces the height you need and glue them to the outside of the 9" square base, gluing the upright corner pieces well with duct tape or packing tape. Then cover it all inside and out with contact paper or a piece of a flannel-backed plastic table cloth. Customize it to fit your space....maybe measure a 9-1/2" square for the base and cut the rest of the cardboard accordingly. Easy to do!

I found mine at Bed Bath Beyond store. Also check out other stores such as Container, IKEA, Home Depot. If you don't have any of these stores in your area, try shopping on their websites.

Had best luck at Hobby Lobby when looking for a special basket for the kitchen. Like most people I planned to line it with a trash bag so I opted for a cool wire basket that was the right height for me but round. Mine stands in the pantry but looks great.

You can use any container that will fit the space, it doesn't have to be a trash can as such. I put my garbage under my sinks because I can't stand seeing trash cans in the room. I use laundry baskets with a plastic bag inside them.

If you need a very cleanable trash can, Rubbermaid makes a “slim Jim” model that’s used in commercial kitchens and will last longer than you want to look at it, lol.
