What's the best ground cover to grow in the shade?

I’m not sure if Periwinkle is a good choice for your area or not? But it makes a nice ground cover and have pretty blue flowers in the spring thru summer usually! It’s always been a pretty hardy plant for me here in Camas, Washington as well as when I lived in Portland, Or. Once established they don’t usually need much attentio. Although apparently the wild rabbits and maybe other critters like to eat them too! Mine get chewed on from time to time living in the country! Check what your zone is and double check with any plant before you buy it that it’s for your zone and the area where you want to plant it. They all require different needs. Some more sun and some more shade. Even your dirt is important whether it’s a good draining soil or not and if your soil is acidic or not? Some need lititle water while other need a lot! So check everything your plants may require?

Also, you might try speaking with your County's Home Extension Agent. They know what will grow best in your specific geographical area. Hope this helps you.

Lamium maculatum (also called spotted dead nettle) is pretty, low growing green and white leaves, with various varieties having white, pink or purple flowers. I also like Gallium odoratum (sweet woodruff), which has tiny white flowers on whorls of small green leaves. Both are good in shade.

Periwinkle is a pretty one!

Better Homes and Gardens published a book called Step by Step Shade Gardens. It has 31 pages with 5 pictures on each page along with their descriptions of plants/shrubs just for shade. Really a great book.
