Quilted Easter Egg

I have been playing with the new fabric collection from Riley Blake called Unforgettable and have just fallen in love with the color scheme! I thought it would be perfect for something Easter themed, so when Stephanie from Crafting in the Rain asked me to participate in her A-Z series, I knew I would want to do something Quilt related and use this Unforgettable collection.

I also happened to have these oval shaped frames from a local wood frame company and I have really not known what to do with them for a long time. Finally it occurred to me that they would make the perfect Easter Eggs. I had already painted it this turquoise color which worked well with the fabric. All I had to do was fit a pretty quilted piece in the frame and it looks like an Easter Egg!

This quilting project is VERY easy and if you want to get started in quilting, this is a great tester project.

Oval Frame (or you can use an Oval Mat in a rectangular frame)

You will need 8 strips of fabric that are 11″ long and 2″ wide. (Good scrap buster!) These dimensions worked for my frame, but you will want to find yourself an oval frame or oval mat and use those dimensions. These dimensions are a pretty safe bet though since they are big and you can always trim it down.

Place two strips right sides together and sew a 1/4″ seam down the long side. Repeat with the other sets, then sew the sets of two to each other. You will end up with one rectangle of the 2″ strips sewn together. Iron all the seams down, pressing to the same direction.

Find a scrap of batting or felt and trim it to the same size as your rectangle. You can baste these together with basting spray or a few safety pins. Just make sure it lays flat and stays together.
