Absolutely love my cast iron!
Soak in washing up liquid overnight and then use scourer.......
Clean the skillet: Wash the skillet by hand using hot water and a sponge or stiff brush. Avoid using the dishwasher, soap, or steel wool, as these may strip thepan's seasoning. Scrub off stuck-on bits: To remove stuck-on food, scrub the pan with a paste of coarse kosher salt and water.
Scrub with hot soapy water and use a brass pad if needed to get it totally clean. Rinse, rinse, rinse and then dry as well as possible, then add a small amount of cooking oil with a paper towel to all surfaces. You do not want to leave it moist as it will begin to rust. Cast iron will last a lifetime if well taken care of in the manner suggested above. Do not leave them soaking in water for a long time. The oil application is called "seasoning" the pan. :) Hope this makes sense is helpful to you :)
I’ve always hand washed, used a drop or 2 of blue dawn and a scouting pad. Once food debris were removed, and pan scoured...and rinsed. dry it over a burner. Re season with oil While the pan is hot. I like olive oil... but any food grade oil works. The scouring will also remove rust If present. If the pan is brand spanking new..there is a coating on it. Scrub well on all sides pan. Coat the intire pan with oil, set in a medium warm oven for a few hours. Now some will call this sacrligous ...all this washing stuff. Some just wipe out and store.
I wipe mine out with a damp papertowel. If there is something that needs to be scrubbed, I use a scubby pad on it (not steel wool), rinse it well, and dry it in a warm oven.

My Mother and Grandmother both burned them in a fire, I usually put in over once a month or so rub inside with good old butter and let them bake mine have never gotten very bad on out side, and I got mine from Grandma and mother. If your are bad I would burn them let then cool off rub with butter inside and out side and bake for at least an hour wipe out they will be good to go. Every time you wash them rub better inside set on burner on high till it smokes them cool down a little and wipe out. I got an old cast iron dutch oven for twelve dollars because it was rusted a little fire butter and bake good as new. Only skillets to cook with for me.
Contrary to everyone saying not to wash them, I have...and with great success. I don’t think the water is as harmful if you dry it properly. So here goes, for a stipuck on mess both inside and out, I use Dawn detergent and baking soda. I use an abrasive sponge and scrub like crazy. If the mess is in the inside, let it sit for a few hours with hot water, Dawn Nd baking soda. Scrub again until it is smooth...no crusty mess left. Rinse well and dry with a paper towel. Since I have a gas stove, I put it on a burner on low heat for about a minute. All the moisture is gone by thrn. When cool, I take some olive oil and salt and thorlightly rub inside. Wipe out all excess...rinse quickly u def hot water z d dry thoroughly. See the pan in a preheated 200 degree oven. Turn off the oven and leave it overnight. This action “seasons” the pan. For several uses., it will lean up much more easily! I have done this for years my iron frying pans are totally fine! Good luck.
