Sand your surface and reapply the stain of your choice. Be aware bare wood will darken with a clear poly or shellac, its often nice to do test patches.
Sand to remove current finish/stain, then wipe clean. If by a different colour you mean something other than a traditional "wood" colour, try Unicorn SPiT - it's my favourite thing, and you can use it on virtually anything (wood, plastic, glass, metal, etc.). You can add water to it to dilute the colour if you want to keep it semi-transparent so you can still see the wood grain. It's totally "blendable", so you can use multiple colours and blend them into each other. Once done, you have to seal it with an oil-based poly or varnish. The poly makes the colour pop beautifully.

You can go darker but can't go lighter.

Sand lightly with the grain. clean properly and then re-stain. Put at least two coats of varathane over top.
