thin the paint a bit, and then sponge or rag on. Experiment on the underside of a shelf.
Paint it white, let it dry, then run a mildly abrasive sandpaper over it.
Paint it white, and then before the paint dries, take a clean rag or a sponge and wipe some of it off - the black will show through in the areas you wipe off, and it'll save you the step of going back & sanding it.
