What is the best type of trellis for morning glories?

You almost need to do something with wire. The vines cannot grab very well onto anything bigger than about 1 inch. I personally would use plastic lattice with chicken wire behind it. Secure it into the ground with those stakes they use for dogs. They look like a corkscrew.

You could probably "build" a trellis from branches or twigs by using zip ties to create the design, then wrap the ties with jute or some other type product so the zip ties didn't show. here's a pic of a twig trellis that's no longer available from a garden store but shows the idea. https://www.gardeners.com/buy/rustic-twig-trellis/38-124.html

You can buy or make a metal arch, whether the vine is at a gate or not. Use concrete blocks to stabilize then, it dig in the ground and pour cement to hold the legs of the arch. Morning glories will latch onto that, and the blooms are in a perfect position for birds, especially hummingbirds. You will have to trim the vines to keep them from also latching onto your house, fence or anything else they can reach, and cut them back almost to the ground in the fall. ☺️

You could try cutting a piece of plastic trellis to the size you require. It is easy to cut with a skil saw.

Lattice might work very well for what you want. You can get it in natural wood or in vinyl that won't age and rot after a few years.

Chicken wire, you can roll it into a pole or attach it to a wall.
