It all depends on what type of curtain or drapes you choose and what type of rod. Typically you install a curtain rod then the curtains. Maybe I am not understanding your question?
curtains ..store bought should have a pocket at the top that you slip the curtain rod through. you may have to purchase the rod hangers separately. I mount mine just above the window trim. you want the curtains long to enough cover the bottom molding on the window. or longer to the floor.
if you have drapes you need a curtain rod that you open and shut by pulling on a string. there is special hardware to put on the drape, then connect it to the carry rod. check to see if all functions.
The easiest and best way is to hang a rod as high as possible on the wall above the window as that will make the ceiling seem taller.The rod should be wider than the window to make it look bigger.
